Quantum key distribution using single-photon sources
07.04.2014
Quantum key distribution (QKD) allows two parties to generate a shared secret key using an untrusted channel by exploiting the quantum mechanical properties of single quanta. Most implementations use strongly attenuated laser pulses. However, as these also contain multiple photons, they open up back doors for eavesdroppers. Using an efficient single-photon source (SPS) can increase the secure key rate. QKD has already been demonstrated with optically pumped quantum dot (QD) SPSs. However, an electrical excitation scheme greatly simplifies the operation of the source.
